THE WAR LOAN.
A STBEET CAMPAIGN. A public campaign to push the six million loan for soldier settlement was inaugurated, without notice, in Cathedral Square yesterday afternoon. Two lorries were stationed in the Square, each placarded with exhortations to subscribe. Seated in each were postal officials ready to collect the money and issue the particulars. It was intended by the Postal Department to have speeches delivered from each of the lorries, but in view of preliminary lack of publicity short statements only were made from the Mayor's car, drawn up at the southern end of the tram Bhelt°r. . , . The Mayor said the campaign marked the final push of the last six millions. The money was wanted and would have to be subscribed, even by compulsion. The people would have to show thoy were as ready with their money as the soldiers were with their services. The campaign would start properly at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Square and it was'intended to ask permission to carry, it to the racecourses and the Show grounds during Carnival week. Mr J. J. Dougall said the loan should appeal to the community as a whole and he believed it would not be necessary to put the compulsory clauses into effect. The campaign was then adjourned until 10 o'clock this morning in the Square. | J |
