ASHBURTON HOSPITAL BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the AsKyurion and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday. Prose-Tit—Messrs C. Reid (chairman), W. J. Dicido-, F. AV. "Watt, "W. H. Hobirrson, T. J. S. Dahert.y, H. J. Harrison, J. Bruce, and "W. T. Lill. Th© treasurer reported a credit balance <rf £1826 17s lid (including the Government subsidy of £123 9b lOd), and that the receipts since Inat- meeting had amounted to £1976 19s. The chairman reported that for tho first itime in the history of the Board there httftl boon an outbreak of emallpox in the district, aaid ihu.t five cases had been reported at Huntingdon on September 1-ttli. Tho Health Department took immediate <icd strong measures 'to prevoct tho spreading of the disease, and no fresh caees had been reported. Correspondence was wad from the Health Department with reference to the employment of rraraes in Tmblic hospitals, and pointing out that it was generally considered that tlx. conditions should be moiLfied so as to allow of a six da ye working weo-k, and a minimum • annual holiday cf 21 • day 6. The Department wished for information as to how many additional probationer nurae3 this would require, and what was the accommodation for such cdditional nurses'. The matron reported that to allorw of the nurses working only six days n week three extra probationers ,would be required, and extra accommodation would also havo to be provided.
