NAVY LEAGUE APPEAL.
Prcminont public men in Great Britain have statod that it was due to the Navv League arousing public opinion that the British Navy was not in a weak and inefficient state as regards quality of ships and guns and number of men at tho outbreak of war. It is also true that tho Navy was the keystone on which the safety of the Empire and of tho Allies depended during the Great TVar. To how many peoplo in this Dominion and in Christchurch in particular has it occurred that we here shall always have to depend upon the Royal Navy and the Mercantile Marino, and that our ships should bo manned by New Zealanders, and not by foreigners, if wo desire to protect our interests. Tho work of tho Canterbury branch of tho Navv League is directed with a view to making public amongst young and old ot all classos the importance of maritime questions, and to encourage sea training by local means for young men and boys. In order to carry on _thi& worii during the ensuing year, it is estimated that a sum o„f noarly £500 will be required over and above amount received in subscriptions, consequently a public appeal for money is being made, on "Navy Day," "Wednesday, 20th mst. There will be a numfcer of stalls tor the sale of producc, needlework, flowers, cakes, and a variety of commodities, and there will also be a street sale of badges, but donations on applications for enrolment may bo sent, direct to the office of the Canterbury branch, 119 Worcester street. o
