ELLESMEBE. •The monthly meeting of tho TO learner* County Council was attended by Cra. J. Cnninghom (chairman), John Heslop, W. J. McEvedy, J. P. McEvedy, F. J. Lemon, and W. O. Rennie. A resolution wae carried nrging tbe Govwrn- t ment to make every effort to have the Hiley ' scheme of railway improvements between Christehurch and Lyttelton carried out as> soon as possible. The clerk wae inaitfitced tt» telegraph tho reeolution to the Prime Mini)--ter. The Minister of Railways wrote, in-answan to a letter from the Council, that he irofl' having a report prepared concerning tho re~\ quest that a warning bell be erected at _ tho Lake road crossing, Leoaton. It was decided that n deputation, representing tho Council and the Lceston Progress League, should waitl upon tho District Railway Engineer in connexion with this matter. Roplies. were received from the Hon. J. Gr. Coatos, Postmaster-General, and the Hon. Sir Hoaton Rhodes concerning the vovr eoal» of telephone charges. Memborf expressed the opinion that ooomtrf subscribers were beingj penalised, and it wa agreed that the chairman should tho Hon. Sir Heaton Rhodes concerning the* matter in Wellington this week, Mr B. R. Howson wrote at length in reference to the Taumutu lagoon culvert. It wad decided to lengthen tho south wing of tho culvert and to close in a water-raeo at McGill's corner. ' Messrs F. B. Clausen, .F. B. Woodaid, S» Johnston, P. Slattery, and J. CGorman in~* torviewed the Council in reference to the Lceston creek overflowing' in times of heavy rain and flooding their properties. They asked that some steps should be token to prevent overflowing in future. It was decided! \o inspect the creek. It was decided to purchase three acres of land from Mr A. Boyce (Irwell) for a shiaglo pit, MOUNT HERBERT. The monthly meeting of the Mt< Herbert County Council was attended by Crs. OxtOtt Bradley (chairman), A. E. Williams, J. A. Gellety B. G. Ware, W. H. Firmston, G. G. Rich, F. R,. BL Gardiner, and J.' D. Burnty. The Defence Department wrote stating that they had allotted two machine guns to tho county. The Council resolved to erect one oti Governor's Bay Domain gTound, and ono »n the schoolgrcund at Port Levy. The Nelson City Council wrote enclosing a resolution that aU moneys required for technical education should be provided by tl» Government, end not by the local bodies. The resolution was approved. .. The Canterbury Progress League's request for co-operation in obtaining the establishment of the proposed School of Forestry, in Canterbury was supported. The Canterbury League wrote regarding tho Hiley scheme In connexion with tho railway, stating that the League would esnd e large deputation to Wellington on the 14th inst., and wished the Council to wire to the Prime Minister in order to support tho deputation. The clerk was instructed to wire on the date mentioned. Mr J. E. Fleming wrote drawing the Conncil's attention to tho near "approach of a new Power Board election, and stating that Jw was willing to represent the • county again. The Council agreed to nominate him. Mrs Pairma-n wrote on behalf of the Governor's Bay. Progress League, urging th« Council to niako arrangements fOT sea bathing and other conveniences on tho beach. The cleTk was instructed to Teply that it wan a matter for the Harbour Board, as the Council had no power to do anything below 1 , hi;?h water mark. Tho Treasury wrote stating that tho eiibgidv on rates, amounting: to £500, would be lodged to the credit of the county fund witiin a few daya. The financial statement showed a debit balance at bank.of £372 0s sd. Rates received! during the past month amounted to £513 12fl Id.
