The newspapers criticise Mr Asquith's proposals regarding Ireland as a complete surrender to Sinn Fein.
The "Westminster Gazette" prefers Viscount Grey's plan of a time limit in which Irishmen shall be called upon to settle their own problem, rather than Mr Asquith's suggestion that Ireland should havo equal rights with the Dominions regarding external relations.
ME McSWINEY'S CONDITION. (United Service.) LONDON, October 5. Tho "Daily Mail," reflecting a changed attitude regarding Mr McSwiney, the hunger-striking Lord i M.iyofof Cork, declares that a wondering public is asking how it is done. Though he has fasted for 54 days. Mr McSwiney's hand is steady enough to shave himself every morning. He. readg the. newspapers daily with interest. Official reports state" that there is no reason to think that death is near, and there is no immediate danger. THEFT OF PLANS. (Australian and JJ.Z. Cable Association.) (Received October 6th. 5.5 p.m.) LOXDOis, October 5. Symington, who was arrested at Brixton' for the illegal possession of arms, has now been charged with stealing nine plans of the Irish Office, including the Chief Secretary's offices, which were stolen while he was a clerk in the Office of Works. Other discoveries in his lodgincs included the minntebook of the English branch of tho Sinr Fein, of which ho was secretary. MILITARY AND SINN FEIN ACTS.
