Mr Platts, the Resident Commissioncr of the Cook and adjacent islands, will return to Now Zealand towards the end of the year, and it is understood that ho will bo appointed to the Now Zealand Bench of Magistrates. His successor is not yet definitely appointed, hut the Government have a suitable man in view. The Pnnio Minister today st a tod that it it war possible for any t>ih to make a success: of the Oook Islands, this man would do it. Civil List BiU. Amendments in tlio Civil List Bill, which passed its third reading in the House to-day, provide for the increase of the honorarium of the Chairman of Committees of tho House to £750, and of the Chairman of tho Upper House to £500. The honorarium of tho Minister representing tho Native race, who has also charge of the Cook and other islands, has been increased to £1100. **
