First forfeits for the following events at the A J.C, Spring Meeting are due to-day: Epsom Handicap, Metropolitan Handicap, Breeders' Plate, Gimcrack Stakes, and A.J.C. D^rby. Mr IT. Stepdancer will visit Gay Lad, while Warstop and Stardancer go to Autumnus. Some of the occurrences at the Marton Meeting have given rise to a lot of talk among those who know the racing game and who have their eyes open (says the "New Zealand Times"). It certainly seems that the best that can be said is that there were some striking instances of shockingly bad judgment. A Manawatu trainer, says the ''Times,'-' who has had difficulty in getting suitable lads for regularly exercising his string of horses, has hit upon a solution of the trouble by appealing to the many young ladies who would benefit by the early rising and the daily exercise. Every morning may bo seen several lady riders exercising the horses and themselves. Tho Wairarapa Racing Club has substantially increased its prize-money for the ensuing season. A number of local trotting enthusiasts met in Mr C. W. Hervey's rooms on Saturday evening to mako a presentation to Mr E. C. McDermott on tho occasion of his approaching marriage. Many complimentary references were I made to Mr McDermott's sterling quali- ' ties, and the high esteem in which he is held in trotting circles, and the chair- : man, Mr R. J. Munro, then presented to Mr McDermott a pair of silver entree I dishes and an oak tray, and in doing so wished him every success in the future. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES.
