LABOUR MATTERS.

o _ EIGHT-HOUR DAT AT SEA. (By Cable —Prese Association-—Oopyrigiht.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) ROME, July* 11. The Seafarers' International Conference at Genoa voted, by 48 to 28 in favour of an eight-hour day for seamen. The motion was lost as a two-thirds majority was required. , BRITISH MINERS' DEMANDS. LONDON, July 11. It is reported that the Government is determined to resist the miners' latest demand for a further 2s per shift, because it is necessary to reduce the cost of living, which the high wages now ruling are keeping up. CTVU. SERVICE STRIKE IN WEST AUSTRALIA. (Received July 12th. 11 p.m.) PERTH, July 12. As a result of the strike all Government offices and schools are being picketed. No civil service work is being done. The Waterside Workers' Union and the Carters' Union of Fremnntle and Perth are sympathetic, and have refused to handle any Government goods which have been declared "black." The Premier, the Hon. J. Mitchell, has issued an ultimatum to his colleagues, that he will resign rather than grant the strikers' demands, and, as the Attorney-General, the Hon. T. P. Draper, supports him in this attitude, the fate of the Government is in the balance.
