Mr and Mrs G. E. Rhodes left last night for Wellington. A Rome message says the Bishop of Armidale, New South \Valcs (the Right Rev. P. J, O'Connor) has been appoint-ed-assistant to tho Pontifical Throne. Mr G. Schneider, headmaster of the Ashburton Borough School, has been appointed temporary inspector in the Canterbury district. He will take up his new duties on August Ist. The election of a member of the Waitaki High School Board of Governors representing the parents of pupils, resulted in tho return of Mr A. E. Lawrence, editor of tho "North Otago Times," Oamaru. Dr. K. Compton Parsons, of Kaiapoi, has been appointed Superintendent of the Ministry of Pensions Hospital, at Cannock Chase, Staiiordshire. Tnis is a largo hospital for military pensioners, accommodating 700 patients, over whom Lieut.-Colonel Parsons has. complete control, as well as over the staff. Mr J. Reid, D«puty-Registrar of the Supremo Court, and Clerk of Awards at Christchurch, will shortly leave for the North Island, having been appointed to a position in the legal department of the Public Trust Office, Wellington. Mr Reid took a keen interest in cricket, and was honorary secretary of the St. Albans Club, and a member of the Canterbury Cricket Association. He is succeeded at ,tho Supreme Court office by Mr W. Harte, of Waimate, and previously of the Christchurch Magis--trate's Court staff. Captain E. R.. G. R. Evans, R.N., C.8., D.5.0., and Mrs Evans, left London in May on a four months' visit to Norway. Captain Evans, at the request of the Chilian Minister in London, recently had his portrait painted bv de Laszlo for the Chilian Navy. H.M.S. Broke, the famous ship in which Captain (then Commander) Evans rammed and sank a German destroyer, and torpedoed another off Dover, in April, 1917, was recently sold to the Chilian Navy, from which it may.be inferred that.Captain_ Evans's portrait is destined for that ship.
