Jottings for Farmers

According to reports which have reached the secretary (Mr C. lienjnmin) of the North Canterbury executive of the Farmers' Union, tho acreage put in wheat is much in excess of last season. Mr iv. Evans states that in order to make the Dominion self-supporting in the matter of wheat-, an additional 130.C00 acres, as compared 'with last season's acreage, -will require to he sown. On an average yield of 2c> bushels per acre, lie considers that 260,000 acres should he sown in order to yield 7,250,000 bushels. IMAESHLAND. A social gathering in aid of the Marshland stall in connexion with the forthcoming bazaar at St. Mary's Church, was held in the Marshland Hall, and proved a decided succes-. Yowil items wero contributed by Misses Stevenson and Young, and Mr Behrcns. Progressive euchro prizes were won hv Miss Lizzie Dobbs and Mr Dobbs, the booby prizes going to Miss Cox and Mr T. 1. alley. Competitions for gifts presented by Father Seymour and Mr •James iSehimanski. wero won by Mrs Holoski and Mr Scobie. The music for the dancing was provided by Mr Resi. Woods, and Mr J. Scliimanski was M.C. The final welcome home tendered by the Marshland Patriotic Society to returned soldiers was held on Wednesday evening, when there was a very large attendance of tho general public and of visitors. A pianoforte duet was played by the Misses Reck, and songs were given by Miss Jean McMillan and Mr Todd. The chairman (Mr W. J. Walter), on behalf of tho residents of the district, extended a hearty welcome home to Private E. Y. Rickerbv, who was presented with the iSociety s gold medal by Mrs ,T. H. Basher. Dancing was indulged in, the music hoing kindly provided bv Mrs H. McMillan, extras being played by Miss Hartley and Messrs Crozicr and Johnson (bagpipes). Mr IT. Marsh capably fulfilled the duties of M.G. The chairman took the opportunity to explain the present position of the proposals in regard to tho district, war memorial, and invited the residents to be liberal in their contributions. Tho Marsh l.ind-Mairehau Cycling Chtb, which is the only body in the vicinity of Christchurch to control cvclo road racing, is to hold its annual social and presentation of prizes on Wednesday evening, and a large gathering is anticipated. The unsightly fence on tho eastern side of the school property is to be replaced bv a new one of posts and wires, and it is expected that the work will be completed this month. BANGIOBA. Mr T. Hills, who has been assistant town clerk and treasurer to the Rangiora Boroucb for about eight years, and who has "been on sick leave for three months, forwarded his resignation to the Mavor during tho week. On Friday. night the Mayor convened a special meeting of the Council to deal with the matter, when it was decidod to accept tho resignation with regret, and it was decided to place on record an appreciation of his past services. Tho resignation will take place as from July 22nd. Considerable discussion took place about tho appointment of a successor, some of the councillors favouring tho appointment of a general manager to tnlte charge of tno affairs of the borough as a whole, instead of an office clerk. Eventually the matter wn deferred to a special meeting of th< Council, to be held on the 19th inst. PBEBBLETON. Messrs John William Kingan, Leonard Alexander Gallagher, and "William Thomas Carpenter aro gazetted, members of tho Prebbletou Domain. Board, in tho place of Messrs Herbert; Prebblo. Edward Prehble Adam, and Henry Faterson, resigned.
