It "was the intention of the conference to suggest methods of relief in directioaa ■where ouch could bo effected

promptly. It would be, necessary _ for th« League during the year to consider tho position, of tho Lake ■ Coleridge supply, and the League ehould forthwith agitate for tho extension of that sourco of supply to its fullest capacity. In tho matter cf tho difference of opinion as to the Marlborough Leagu® and tho completion of the South Island Muin. Trunk line, and tho West Coast line, tho resentment felt by the Marlborough Leagu® was based on a misapprehension as to tho attitude of tho Canterbury League. The latter League, however, had decided to tnlco every opportunity availalilo of supporting the completion of the Trunk line. The y attitudo of the Canterbury League to Marlborough was mogt eympathetic, and the Canterbury League had no objection whatever to tho Marlborough League being associated with the "Wellington League. Tho country library sr.home organised by the League was proving) highly successful, and the organiser had received many letters of commendation frorni the districts benefited.

MY P. R. A letter was received from tho Ashbnrtoa County Council relative to the port communication question, eiuting that tho Council was very emphatically in favour of Port Lyttelton with Mr Hi ley's scheme, and that, under the circumstances, the Council was no# inclined to send representativea to tho conference to be held on the 14th inst. The organiser said that the Ashbcxton County Council appeared to bo under a mie« apprehension as to tie attitude of tho I/xiguo on the matter, and the purpose of the. conference. He would, however, be Ashburton shortly, and would cxpTaTn tho matter to tho Asbbirrton Council. The matter waa left to the organiser.
