THE COUNTRY.

EAIAPOL Tlu> Board of Management of tho Kaiapoi Technical Classes met on Tuesday. Present—Messrs H. Mcintosh (in the chair), F. Thorno, It. Dunn, and H. Trustrum. A motion of sympathy with the chairman, Mr W. Doubledav, in his illness, was passed. A favourable report was received from the Inspector of Technical Schools on the wool-classing and'woodwork classes. He suggested that periodical visits to tha classes should be made by members of the Board. A letter was received fi'om tho _ Director of Technical _ Education, advising that representation on the Board had been fixed as follows: — Kaiapoi Borough Council, 1 member; Eyre County Council, 1 member; North Canterbury A. and P. Association, Rangiora County Council and Kaiapoi Farmers' Union, 1 member; North Canterbury Freezing Company, Kaiapoi Woollen Company, Kaiapoi Working Men's Club, and Kaiapoi School Committee, 2 members; Board of Education, 3 members. It was decided that Messrs R. Wylio, 11. Dunn, and F. Thome be recommended as the Education Board representatives. The secretary reported that a number of trees and shrubs had been procured and planted in the Technical School grounds. SOUTHBBIDGE. A large number of people attended the final welcome home social to returned soldiers in the Southbrdgo district, which took place in the Town Hall. The function was held in honour of Privates 11. McJarrow and G. Adams, and Rifleman A. Worner. Dancing was indulged in .to music supplied by Mr J. W. A. Walker. Addresses of welcome were given by Messrs J. Cunningham (chairman Ellesmere County Council), E. J. Cowan (chairman Patriotic Committee), and J. C. Free, the latter gentleman presenting gold medals to the guests. The opportunity was taken to thank the ladies of the district for what they had done to make the socials held in honour of soldiers during the last six years, the success they had been, special reference being made to the work of Miss G. M. Glanville, who had supervised the supper arrangements at all the socials. ' It is worthy of note that 75 gold medals have been presented to returned men at Southbridge. Sixteen of the men who went from the district made the great sacrifice.

BTJNSANDEIi. Mr W. Gilbert, who recently sold liis farm at Dunsandel, and acquired a larger holding at Medbnry from Mr G. Gardner, was tho guest at a largelyattended farewell smoke concert, held in ili© Dunsandel Town Hall 011 Tuesday night. Mr D. T. Wraight, who presided, presented Mr Gilbert with a cigarette-holder and a packet for himself, and <i lady's companion for Mrs Gilbert. Complimentary references to the good qualities of Mr and Mrs Gilbert were made by Messrs H. F. Wright, A. Johns, AV. Owers, N. J. Brown, and E. J. Chatterton, and MiGilbert made a suitable reply. Numerous toasts were honoured, and songs were sung by Messrs A. Johns, Buckenliam, H. F. "Wright, N. J. Brown, G. I/loyd, W. Owers, and H. A. Brown. Tho function concluded with "Auld Lang Syne." A very successful and enjoyable social was held under the auspices of the Dunsanacjel Hall and Library Committeo. The first prizes for euchre were won by Mrs Happer and Mr C. Chatterton, and the consolation prizes bv Miss Owers and Mr J. Chatterton. After the cards a dance was held to music snpnlied bv Misses • and M. I/ill, and Mr W. Chappell.
