MEETING OF COUNCIL. Tile Council of the Canterbury Automobile Association met last rijrht. Present —ilocsio J. S. liawlves (chairman), A. i'. Cbukioi:, X. M. Orbell, It. MacCartuey, P. S. Nicholfc, B. Falck, H. T. Cooper, ana F. D. Sargent. The Soldiers' Car Committee reported timt JJr Mc'i'iei' lio-d purchased the soldiers' car. On the. motioa of Mr Falck it was decided to grant a bonus of f.ve jj-uincaa to tho driver cf the oar. in p.pprecitiou of his sor.'ict-s. Letters of thanirs for expressions of sympathy wero received from Mrs D. Xichoils, Mr y. Kibblcwhite, Mrs \Y. B. Cunningham, and Mr "\Y. Goss.
Mr G. Wilt?, M.P.. wrote- enclosing a letter from the Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works, stating that th<! preparation of the detailed plans, specifications, and estimates of cost for tho Selwyn bridge- had not hitherto been treated as a matter _of urgency owing l to tho difficulty in securing hardwood timbers from' Australia. When tho pltins had been completed, and tie probable cost of the bridge known, the question of whether the Department would tako initial steps in connexion with the Betting 1 up of a Royal Commission would receive attention.
The following •were elected members of the Association: —Messrs R. AY. Fleming, Vf. Jamicson, T. D. Barker, Donald McLean, B. Martin, F. A. Busch, 11. if.. Bailey, W. T. Hendry, W. H. Barton, W. Gee, W. McGucken, C. Fe&ry ar.d Hanmer and Barker. Tho question of sending' delegates to the Now Zealand Automobile Union's annual meeting was referred to tho South Island Motor Union. The Roads Committee reported that aijrns had been erected at tho junction of Drain road and Hill Toad (Birdling'fa Corner), and at Shirley, Spotswood, Parnassus, and on the following bridges-.—Ashley, Kowai. Waipara, Hurunui, Waiou, and Leader. A_ deputation of tho Roads Committee had waited on tho Paparua County Council regarding bridges across six water-races between Wccdons and Buroliani. It 'was agreed that the counties interested, with tho Association, should contribute one-third each, and that tbe work should b© carried out as soon as possible. The bridging of these woter-racee would complete this work between Christchurcli and Rakaia. The report was adopted. The By-laws Committee reported that in compliance with a request from the Halswpll County Council, the president and Mr t. u. Sargent had waited on the Council on Juno 29th, when tho following speed limits wero »<rreed to:— 25 miles on Lower Lincoln rood between tho boundary of tho county at the bridge over th° river Hesthcot© to the jnnption Hotol, Halswfll; 20 miles per hour V-twoen Junction.
