NICOLL HONOURED. At the conclusion of tho meeting of the committeo of the Ashburton Trotting Club on Tuesday evening, a social wa« hold, wheu « the sorvicoa of Mr H. F. Nicoll vrere recognised by a presentation. Mr D. McDonnell presided, and congratulated Mr Nicoll on the excellent manner in which he had conducted the affaire of the Ashburton Trotting Club during the 14 years ho had "been president When Mr Nicoll took offica the stakes were £150, distributed over eight races, while to-day they offered £2GDO for a one-day meeting, the largest sum offered by any country trotting or racing club in the Dominion. Mr Nicoll had nleo added 60 per cent, to the membership of the club. Mr McDonnell then .presented Mr .Nicoll, who is leaving- on a visit to England, with a gold-mounted racebook cover, with wishes for a , happy voyage and safe return to ta&* over the -government of the Ashburton Trotting Club's nffaira. Mr F. B. Eobilliard stated that the guest of the evening W piloted the club from a stato of bankruptcy to solvency. Complimentary remarks were also made by Messrs J. Lewis, W. Bryant F. Smith, and D. P. Garrick. Tho toast was drunk with musioal honours. Mr Nicoll, in reply, spoke of the erowth of the club, and referred t-o winning tho chief raca after being elected a vice-president with D-urbar, with the late J. Brankin in tho saddle, the ©take being £45. The two was covered iu 4min 44eec. In 1006 the stakes were about £110, but in the following year they rose to £260, and £270 for each of the two meetings held in the year.
