RUSSIA.

TROUBLE IN TRANS-CAUCASIA. (B- Cahlo—Press Association —Copyright.) ("Tlm Time®.") TEHERAN, May 31. The Tartar Soviet Government of Azerbaijan, established after the occupation of Baku, exists merely as a nominal republic, torn by conflicting Turco-Russian intrigues. Moscow influence predominates. The Government maintains relations with Persia, but has broken oft relations with the Allies. Eighty interned British are employed as labourers. After the occupation of Bnku the Bolsheviks proceeded to deal with Georgia mid Armenia. They temporised with Georgia, and pretended to rccognise its independence, and actually signed a peace at Tiflis on May Bth. There was great rejoicing. Meanwhile, heavy Red forces were concentrated on the frontier from Bakuj and heavy fighting v.-as proceeding. Armenia was rouchlv handled from the outset, but p!u"kily rejected the order to evacuate Karadagh. A new Cabinet was formed which suppressed the internal Bolshevism and prepared to resist the Reds to the last dit?h.

Prolonged resistance is impossible. The only hope fs for peace between tho Allies and the Bolsheviks, which is likelv to cause Turco-Bolshevik dissension, disintegrate the monstrous opportunist alliance, and incline the Bolsheviks to give Armenia a clit-.nce, Turkey is determined to destroy Armenia. _ Apparently the far-reaching Bo 1 shorn k designs on Persia have been postponed, pending the subduing of Georgia and Armenia. The situation at Enzeli is unchanged. THE SOVIETS' GOLD. (Reutei's Telegrams.) LONDON, May 31. The Ukrainian diplomatic mission has written to Mr Lloyd George protesting against Krassin's reported intention to pay gold for proposed purchases on behalf of the Soviet Government of Russia, on the ground that a share of the gold in the Russian State Bank belongs to the Ukraine, which iu also partially liable fo-r the Russian gold reserve which _ the Soviets captured in the Kremlin. The mission asks for the transmission of the protest to the Supremo Economic Council. j ===== I
