The directors of the Tuion Steam Ship Company yesterday presented Captain D. McLean with a tea and coffee service on the occasion of his retirement after 33 years' active work, for 29 vears of which he was a master in the emplov of the company. He was master of the Xincara. and also the Mokoia when sho . made the recent Parliamentary trio to i the Wands. Captain McLean will bo ( best remembered as mrster of the Mnf bono for the whole ncriod during which , j that vessel was used as a hospital ship. ii At the meeting of tho Philosophical ~ Institute last night, Dr. Chilton, in th o i absence of the president of tho Xew Zealand Institute (Professor Easterfinld), presented the Hutton Memorial Medal to Dr. J. E. Holloway. He explained that the medal was struck in memory of Dr. Hutton, the first biolopist jirofessor at Canterbury College, and subsequently curator nt tho Museum. Tho award was mado to Dr. Hollowav by the Beard of Governors in j recognition of his researches in conr>e\v<>n with Now Zealand botany. D*. Chilton snid that the reciuient's work iin this direction had made his name • well-known throughout New Zealand, , and his works wore also read in England find elsewhere. IT" congratulated i Dr. Hollowav on winning the medal, and on the good work ho had done in that branch of scientific research.
