The death is announced of -Mr Melhuish, financial editor of the "Argus." "CHINESE" MORRISON. (Received June Ist, 8.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 1. The newspapers pay lengthy tributes to the late Dt. G. E. Morrison. The death of Mr William Lock, at his residence at Timaru, removes another of tho band that knew Invercargill in tho pioneer days. Mr Lock, who was 7S years of age at tho time of his death, went from Queenstown to Invercargill, where he established a bakery business. This he conducted with considerable success for manv years, removing some years ago to Timaru. He was an enthusiastic bowlor, being a member of the Southland Club._ Mr Lock, who was predeceased bv his wile some years ago, leaves a family. The death occurred at Ngahinepouri. North Island, of Mr Allan Macdougall Cartnichael, who farmed in Southland for a number of years, and some eight rears ago be;ran a similar occupation at Kawhia. Mr Carmichael, who was born in Argyllshire, Scotland,' settled m Southland many years ago. During his long residence in Southland Mr Carmichnel took a prominent part in the public life of the province,_ and did his full share in promoting its interests. He was a member of the Bluff Harbour Board, the Southland H. and C.A. Board. "Wallace A. and P. Association, and the Wallace County Council, having also been chairman of the last-named body. He twice contested the Wallace Parliamentary seat, once against Mr M. (now Judge) Gilfedder, and at a later dite against Mr J. C. Thomson, but, although he polled well, he was not successful. Mr Carmichael is survived by his widow (a daughter of the lato Mr James Mackintosh) and a grown-up family. H's only son, Allan, served in France and fjeleium as n gunner with the Otr"xo Battalion, returning severely wounded.>
