WAR MEMORIAL.
ACTIVITIES OF THE COLUMN COMMITTEE.
SUBSCRIPTION LIST OPENED. TO THE EDITOR OF "THZ TRESS." Sir.—Believing ihat there is an earncs: cesire cn the part of the peoplo of Cinist.iuircli and the .Xorih Canterburv district, of which Cini.-tcl.urch is the centre, that a fitting monument shall be erectcd to tho mem-ory of our soils who lie buried in foreign lands, the Memorial Column Comm.ttee is opening a public subscription with that object in tho '"Lytielton Times'' and 'Tress" to-dny.
It is the Lope and wish of tho Committee that Hie monument shall take the form of a column situated in Cathedral square, but it is intended to submit the question of site Ultimately to a _ plcbisci.o of tho subscribers, who wilf also bo given a voice in the selection of a des.gn. In the opinion of the committee, no site can coinpaie with Cathedral square for such a purpose, and hesitation would on.'y arise in our minds if the support given were insufficient to provide a monument worthy of so line a s;te. A trivial or insignificant column in such a position would, of course, be out of the question. It js intended that in somo way within or upon the base tho names cf fallen soldiers and of all who served shall bo perpetuated and enshrined. In doing this we shall bo complying with tho injunction contained "in "the Scroll issued by his Gracious Majesty the King to "see to it that their (his) name be not forgotten." The co'umn will bo a cenotaph in the true sense—that is, a n-iomrnent to those who are buried cl.-ewhere.
We are aware that many people have subscribed to vr.rous forms of memorial in tho country distrcts and elsewhere, but we hare jeason to beVeve that there are still manv throughout the country who \vr-uUI like to have a i sorse of personal interest in a monu- ' ment erected upon the historic site in Cathedral square, which is the inmost centre of tho old Provincial District of Canterbury.
It is honed tbavt the necessary amount (from £5000 to £10 may be subscribed, not in large sum- from a naiTow source, but by small subscriptions frrrn thousands who are conscious of a debt stiM undischarged to th-ose who, in the Kind's words "gave un their own lives t'-at others might live in freedom."—Yoir-s, etc.,
