MOTOR HORNS ON THE SUMMIT ROAD.
TO THE EDITOR OF "TEE PRESS." Sir, —Apart from the mutual consid- i eration which motorists and pedestrians will' surely extend to eacli other upon this narrow road, there is only one satisfactory solution for tho present difS- : culty, and that is tho construction of a walking track, four feet wide, parallel j to the present Summit road, bub suffi- ! eiently far from it to escape tho motor dust, and, perhaps, soften the tones of unmusical horns. Mr M. G. Ell, tho prophet of tho pcliomo (whoso work for the public weal j in this connexion should, by tho by, be more widely acknowledged), has suggested to the Summit Road Association tho construction cf such a separate : walking track, and we are prepared to ; push on the work if tho public will give us the necessary funds. * 1 Probably but a small section of tho public is aware that the construction and repair of theso roads, and the ; building of rest houses beside them, is : going on all tho time at the expense of , this .Association, and that we aro now j over £2000 on the wrong side of tho j ledger. j It has occurred to me that we might get together early next summer, a vigorous band of volunteers, who would form a holiday camp upon the Hills, and, under expert supervision, push this walking track through in a few weeks".' A little of the energy now being expended in this controversy might bo helpfully applied, if it could bo translated into torms . of road making.— Yours, etc., TO. MACHIN, Chairman Summit Road and Reserves Association. May 29 th.
