ANGLO-JAPANESE ALLIANCE

QUESTION OF RENEWAL,

m T Cable—Press Association—Cop^ri^ht.) (Australian and X.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, May 28. Tho Tokio correspondent of "The Times" reports that tho I'oreign Oiiioo states that the Governments at Tokio and London have not yet discussed tho conditions of tho renewal oi tho Anglo-Japanese alliance, although the time for giving notice of its abrogation or amendment expires in July. It seems to be takon for granted that tho revision of 1011 will he allowed to stand. This confidence is apparently reciprocated in London. The official calm in Tokio strikingly contrasts with the atmosphere of distrust resulting from newspaper sacculations in Jauan and abroad. Critics in tho Far East are particularly prono to overlook that the larger benefits of the Alliance were never greater than to-day.' Abrogation would foster revolt throughout the Middle and Near East, and would play directly into the hands of the Bolsheviks. Japan does not object to_ the British Dominions consulting their best interests, hut, regarding the cabled report that Australia desires to bo considered before final decisions are reached, it is felt that tho Australian position could be made clear without the creation of tho erroneous impression that the country is wholly opposed to the Alliance. Similarly, news from Washington overlooks the provisions of 1919, safeguarding Great Britain and America. This caused much heartburning in Japan, hut_ the nation is now reconciled to limitation. That Japan greatly desires good relations with America is not gainsaid. There is widespread anti-Japanese sentiment in China and Russia, tho cffects of which, cannot he ignored.
