The Chief Secretary, Mr Doolcy, speaking at the building trades picnic, and referring to the evenness of parties and the selection of a Speaker, declared that the only result of blocking the Government from getting a Speaker would be that they would go straight to the country again. The Government, he said, was running a hurdle race, and might not clear the Speakership hurdle. If they could not negotiate it cleanly, they would not try to crawl under it. There might be another election before some people thought. ADMINISTRATION OF PAPUA. SYDNEY, April 17. Several prominent men connected ■with Papua, including the liishop of the Catholic Mission in the territory, write "to the Press traversing Captain Fitch's statements regarding the causes of dissatisfaction. One letter summarises the position, saying that tho trouble was caused through the Administrator's policy of developing the country and safeguarding the interests of the natives, which clashes with the commercial interests. IMMIGRATION. SYDNEY, April 17. Mr Edgar Home, a member of the House of Commons, who is visiting Australia for the purpose of investigating the possibilities of settling exservico men here, reports that most of the men will go either to Canada or New Zealand, as Australia will not be ready for any concerted immigration until the Expeditionary Force men have been settled.
