LABOUR UNREST.
LANCASHIRE SPINNERS' DEMAND (Bv Cable—Press Association—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cablo Association.) (Received April ISth, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. April 17. The leaders of the Lancashire cotton spinners and eardroom workers are demanding a 60 per cent, increase in ■wages. Tliev have refused the employers' offer of arbitration, and terminated negotiations. Thev ivill take a ballot for a striko on May Ist. affecting 400,000 operatives. The position is the gravest for many yoars. BRITISH MINERS' BALLOT. LONDON, April 15. Tho final figures of the miners' ballot give a majority of 65,000 in favour of the acceptance of the Government ofYer. The Lancashire and South Wales miners favoured a strike, but the Yorksliiremen were largely in favour of peace. AMERICAN" RAILWAY STRIKE. NEW YORK, April 16. The railroad companies have issued an ultimatum to the workers to return to work "'>y noon on Sunday. Men returning to work will be reinstated inimediatclv. The railroad companies reserve the right to refuse to re-employ those guilty of violence or seditious utterances during the strike. FORTY-FOUR-HOUR WEEK. (Received April 18th, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. April 18. Speaking at the Building Trades picnic, the Chief Secretary, Mr Dooley, dealing with the movement for a fortyfour hour week, said thero was nothing very extraordinary in tho demand, but the method of achieving it was debatable. He had no desire to dictate to the unions on the mattor. I.W.W. PRISONERS. SYDNEY, April 17. The Hon. J. Storey has announced that an immediate inquiry will be held into tho case of twelve nrisoners, whose case has not been settled.
