Held on the vicarage grounds on Saturday wtenwon the parish fete in connexion with at. Mary s, Addington. was largely attended and was highly successful. The Mayor, who was accompanied by the Mayoress, formally opened the fete. Choers were given for the Mayor and Mayoress and for Canon and Mrs Bean. The stalls and those in charge of them were:—Sweets, Miss Bean; produce, Mesclamo3 Mclaughlin, Evans, and Brown, an j w iss I 'Anson: variety, Misses Thomas and Morton; needlework, Mrs Lester; afternoon tea, Mesdames Munnings and Andrews and Miss Beale; ice cream, Mesdames Hawand Capstick; palmist, Mrs Saunders, ihe baby show -attracted five entries in each class. Dr. Thacker was judge and made the following awards:—Under 12 months- Raymond White 1, Natalio Lester 2. Under six months: Douglas Bailey 1, James Higgins 2. The judge remarked that the babies exhibited were a very flno lot—there was not two marks difference between the whole lot. ASHBURTON A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. * MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the General Commiltee of the Ashburton A. and P. Association was held on Saturday, Mr A. Horsey presiding. Letters were received from various" judges who had officiated at the late show,' offenng suggestions with a view to increasing the I popularity of the show, and making it more instructive from an educational point of view. A suggestion was also made that the spring would be a more suitable time than tlie autumn for holding future shows. Mr E. Keig, who was the judge in the milk-testing competition, forwarded his awards as follows:—Martin Friedlander 1, Peter Drummond 2, F. G. Reid 3. Special praise was" duo to A. Doak, aged 12 years and 7 months, who, for ?o young a competitor, showed great knowledge of his work and he had pleasure in asking the Association to award him a special prize as a donation from himself. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the judges for their sen-ices and suggestions. A telegram was received from the Prime Minister, in reply to a request that a delegate to represent the Ashburton County as a whole should be appointed, in addition to the delegate® from the Farmers' Union, at the conference to be held in connexion with the export of meat, dn.iry produce, etc. The Association's request had been referred to the president of the Board of Agriculture. Sir J. G. "Wilson wrote, stating that at this late stage he regretted no further re . prosentative could bo appointed. The conferenc© be representative of all the interests connected with the export of meat and dairy produce. A protest was entered against the decision, members being of opinion that the Ashburton district was entitled to rend a delegate. A letter was read from Mr Thomas PcnI nell, offering a mixture, which he felt sure would absolutely destroy Californian thistle. The offer was accepted, and a committee set up to carry out experiments. Mr J. Brown who was the judge of the eesay competil tion in connexion with the late show, said there was evidence in the essays that the A and P. shows were of great educational value. The first prize essay was of remarkable merit. The result of the judging was—Nena Lloyd 1, Miss Baunton 2, Gordon Morrison 3, E. Marshall v h c. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Brown for the great interest and trouble he had taken in connexion with the essays. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. A meeting of the committee was held on Friday evening, Mr A. R. Ragg presiding over a good attendance. The principal business was to make arrangements for the annual chrysanthemum show. It was decided to alter the dates from Mav 6th and 7th to May 13th and 14th. An invitation has been extended to the Prince of Wales to visit this show. The following judges were appointed—Cut blooms, Messrs A. Cant and G W* Bishop; fruit, Mr Stratford; Mr W. H. Lawrence; decorative, Messrs R. Nairn and W. Jones. It was decided to placo on record the valuable assistance given to the Society by the late Mrs Geo. G. Stead,. who -was a vice-president of the Society, and a vote of condolence with her family in their bereavement was passed.
