At yesterday's meeting of tho New Zealand Trotting Association, a number of fines were received from various clubs on account of drivers or riders who had been called off for starting beforo tlioir time and fined for that offence. The president (Mr P. Selip) said that the crop of fines tmder notice brought to his mind the starting at tho Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting. He had b:cn therw during the threo days, and without any rcferenco to tho merits of tho yards or sccond* system, he considered the starting nt that meeting was reaj!y wonderful. Ho had watched it carefully, and had gono to tho start for some of tho races, and with tho exemption of two races, tho starting was perfect. In one ca?o a horse wpH slightly turned round, ar.d in another it was jogging about, but they both pot away eventually Thcro were no cases of horses being callcd off beforo their time—that was rot possible— and tho startin? was satisfactory to tho club, to tho pub'.ic, and to thoso taking part in tho rarcs. Mr Nicoll said that one point that called for notice was tho difference in tho amount of the fines. Drivers were fined £1 or £5. hut tho owner might be fined in effect £300.

Mr Dfnlnn snirl that lip wn* in favour of the yards system, but whatever system they ha<? ehou'd bo uniform, whether it mus yard* or Ffcondi". Tho trouble was that tome clubs were using the yard«_ system, but vrould not admit ij<§ At the New Brighton Meeting they had Had practically tho yard* sytcm in co.ijunrtion with the clock, and riders and drivers had hod to wutch bith stylos Mr Short unid that tho question had only been postponed from ln«t conference. The pres : dent said they could do nothing in tho matter at present, and the subjcct then dropped.
