FLAPPERS OR MEN?
SOLDIEBS OXJT OF WORK. Allegations were made again at last night's meeting of the Canterbury District Repatriation Board that whereas girls woro employed in various offices, particularly Government, men clerks walked about tho streots rainly looking for cinployement. The Emplryment Committee reported that since DvcembDr oth last tlicy had placed 75 men and had received 74 applications, and there weiv 33 men out of employment. Tho position was regarded as very satisfactory. Air X. B. Mr.Callum said that from his knowledge the position in regard to clerks was more unsntisfaetny than appeared in tho report. What was accentuating tho position was that the Base Records Office in Wellington was (lischarg'n<» men and tin- Defence Department had boon rer anised. Mr T. Winteringham, Assistant Repatriation Officer, said several of the men demobilised had boon induced to join a special elass for the purpose of entering the Public Sen-ice. Mr W. E. Lcadley said that in all tho big centres in the North Island there were clerics out of employment, whilst flappers were doing the" work' It was a shame that girls should still .•e employed in Government whilst men who had been, regarded ns heroes were now regarded as nuisances when tiny looked for work.
