THE LYTTELTON SEAT.

ro THE EDITOR OK "TIIX TRIMS." Sir, —In reply to "Opawa Liberal," in your issue of the Bth, permit mo to state lie might at least finvo had tho moral couraga to sign his screed, sinco no tnan, who has any self-respect in his make up, or tho smallest chemical trace of honesty in his being, will over write anonymous letters.

L'.kn many other honest elertors in this district, I doubt as to his being a Liberal supporter at all, and strongly suspect him of being tarred with the old Conservative brand—however, he displays an unwarranted ignorance of tho voting powers in this electorate. Let us briefly nnnounco them. Woolston has about 3000 voters, Lyttelton 2800, tbo Peninsula about 1800, Cashmere Hills and Sumner, say, 500 each. Sir Macartney, while a good citizen in many respects, is an unknown quantity in politics outside the farming community of the Peninsula—and, granting that ho will poll heavily there, it will fail to give him any strone point when i the final notices go- up. Woolston and Lyttelton aro tho boroughs where tho! returning officers will be kept bu.^y,! and it is in these plices Mr Lester will score over his opponents. Ho is deservedly the most popular man in Lyttelton to-day, was elefted Mayor in 1917, 1918, and returned unopnosed in 1919. In addition, he was chairman of tho Woolston Works Committee when that body carried out a very largo programme of works. Further, quite a number of JJie waterside workers nre acting on his committee, proving that Mr MrCombs will not get tho solid support of Labour. If tho "Opawa Liberal" is sincere in his remarks, which I very much doubt, why did ho not use his influenco to got Mr Macartney to resign in favour of Mr Lester, aa a man who holds tlio favourable opinion of the community, and who will carry tho confidence of a big majority of tho populace on election day?— Yours, ofce., E. H. HENDERSON. Lyttelton, .December 10th.
