REMARKABLE REFERENDUM.

WHAT CHItISTCIIURCII DOCTORS THINK. In tho courso of ft public address ftt tho Opera. House lost woek, Dr. A. B. O'Brien .said: — •'The health of the community is entrusted to the doctors, whose opinion must be taken in all matters rivaling to it. At a large meeting of the Chrislchurch doctors, held during bust campaign, a vote was taken; first, as to whether alcohol was necessary as a beverage; nnd second, whether its uso was nocessary in combating disuise. On the first question there were 20 who voted "No,'' lonving only one vote for tho necessity of aleoiiol as a beverage; on the second question, 11) votos were registered ill the negative, mid only two in tho affirmative. The results were published at tho time in the local newspapers. I contend that it is of far more valuo to you to pay attention to what your doctors tell you, than to listen to people from other places, for tho doctors live amongst you and know your conditions. Only ono doctor in 21 thought it necessary ns a Ik l veraac, and only two in* 21 thought it was useful in disease. "I>o your best to spread the truth that alr>ohol is not of any use or necessity. You havo this big issue in your bands. T hop© on Polling Day you will rise to the occasion, and go to tho Poll joyfully to wipo out this dreadful curse." [Adyt.]
