CHRISTMAS MARKET.
A SUCCESSFUL OPENING. Tho big Christmas market in aid of St. Matthew's Day School was opened in the Art Gallery yesterday afternoon by her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool. Her Excellency was met at the door by Canon Wilford," who expressed the pleasure of all to welcome her there that afternoon. Lady Liverpool's sympathy and interest in tho object of the market was well known, and he was sure lie voiced the opinion of n!l when he said that her Excellency would Ik* very much missed when she left for England.
If or Excellency was then presented with a lovely bouquet of crimson and gold roses, the presentation being made by a iittle "fairy queen," Stella Chanman, who was attended bv six inr.ius of honour, all attired as fairies and carrying posies of white roses. Lady Liverpool thanked Canon Wilford for his kind remarks. She was very glad to come and assist by opening the Market. She had had tho opportunity- of seeirg a church school — that of St. Mark's :n Wellington—and she fe'.t sure there was a j£te*it future he(o:e the Church of England schools. They deserved the sympathy and suppert nf all who were interested in tho training ef children to be good citizens. (Applause.) Her Excellency then made a tour of tho stalls and m-ule several purchases. The stalls were prettily arranged, and were laden with attractive and useful goods. Especially v. ell-furnished was the art sta'l. wliHi was prosified over by the College House working P'irt.v. Other stalls were:—Cake str.ll, Mesdunes TJeckett, Pincknev. Merivr.le Sunday School teachers: blouses. Mrs Dampier Crosslev ard Mrs 11. Cray ; toys'. Mi.-s Wray: bandkerchiefs and to'i»t requisites. Mrs A. D. Houston: cbin't, holies and antique*. Mrs W. Woi <: children's mods. Mrs J.tTni" r on and Mrs Eric Harper: fancv cood*. Mrs If. D. Andrews', Mrs Allard and Heywnod: and produce. Miss Duller. Mrs Sanr'ston. Mrs C. 0. and Miss Miller. A novel form of bran tub was n representation of an ancient castle with toves and embrasures. Through the latter presents wore proc'i a'le on payment of a vma'.l sum.
