Local hotel proprietors arc at present experiencing great difficulty in secnriiicr domestic lielp (says tho "Southland Times"). In conversation with one manager last week, a reporter _was informed that recently tho position was so bad that tliero were serious intentions of closing the hotel down. This manager lias - advertised for a fortnight for waitresses, and so far ho has received one lep'ly, and that from an inexperienced girl. Besides waitresses, he has found that the shortage includes cooks and pantryniaids. In his opinion it is largely caused by the practice of many "irls'of taking advantage of the demand from holiday resorts to secure n change of air. Working for five or sis months many of them then eair-af-ford to live in idleness for tho rest of tho year, and when the tourist season returns they strike out for pastures new. In the Courtcnny school on Friday evening, a pleasant social gathering was tendered to Mr nnd Mrs F. McAnultiy, who are leaving to reside at Waddington. The popularity which Mr and Mrs McAnulty earned during their thre >. years' residence in Courtenay was evidenced by the largo gathering from surrounding districts.
