DOMINION TRAMWAY CONFERENCE.
PROCEEDINGS ADJOURNED. The Hon. J. Barr. chairman of the Christchurrh Tramway Board, and Mr F. Thompson, general manager, have leturned from "Wellington, where the first Dominion Tramway Conference has just come to an indecisive end. Ten tramway managements were represented at the Conference. which was held on the suggestion of the Train\rav Kmployees' Federation,' and an effort was made to come to some agreement. with regard to rates of pav and conditions, that would ho universal'v suitable to all systems in the Dominion. Tho representatives of the employers took nearly three days in coming to n preliminary agreement nmonj themselves, it "being found that the conditions of employment ns well as the rates of pay in different places varied very considerably. At the same time the representatives of the Tramway I'nions in tho Dominion were in session, having previously supplied the managements with their for a Dominion agreement and been supplied with the employers' counter proposals. It is underrt"vl that thc?<» counter-proposals involved considerable increases in i>ay iir many cases. Tho parties wore, however, una hie to Pgrec at thp outset to the rate per hour for the lowest paid grade of men and tho proceedings came to an inconclusive termination.
