The many friends of Mrs John Aiken, of Rock Villa, Sumner, will regret to learn that she is seriously ill in a private hospital in Christchurch. Mr Leslie Wobber (Auckland), who returned by the Corinthic, arrived in Christchurch yesterday, and is staying with Mrs Wyon Stevens, Shirley. A garden party for members of the Diocesan Synod and their wives will be held at Bishopscourt to-morrow afternoon. It will be under the auspices of the Diocesan Sunday School Tcachers' Association. The friends of Mr H. A.. Bown, of this city, will regret to learn that he received ruble advice yesterday mdrning of the death of his mother, which teok place at Mount St. Evin's private hospital; Easton Hill, ; Melbourne. Mrs Bown, sen., paid a visit to New Zealand in the autumn of 1918, in , her 81st year, and those who had the privilege to meet her will be interested to know that sho retained all her faculties to the end. About three months ago she developod a- serious throat trouble, which necessitated an unusual and delicate operation, to which she finally succumbed. Mrs Bown was a devoted adherent of the Roman Catholic Church, and leaves a. large circle of friends to mourn her loss. WEDDINGS. EVISON^FOSTER. A pretty wedding was celebrated at the Lyttefton Methodist Church yesterday, when Miss Beatrice Maud Foster, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. T. Foster, Reserve terrace, was married to Mr S. It. Evison, of Christchurch. The church was prettily decorated, and the service was fully choral. The Rev. F. L. Frost performed the ceremony, and Mrs Vere Livingstone officiated at the organ. Tho brido was given away by her father, and looked charming in white crepe de chine, georgette overdress, hand embroidered, with veil and wreath, and carried a bouquet of natiye clematis. The bridesmaid was her sister, Miss Nancy Foster, who was dressed in mauve crepe de chine, with black hat, relieved with mauve and gold beads, and carried a bouquet of cinerarias. A tiny sister of the bride, Miss Freda Foster, dressed in pink crepe de , ! chine, with black hat and toque to match, made a dainty littlo flower girl. The bridegroom was attended by Mr W. H. Wrai<jht as best man. The wedding breakfast was held in the Excelsior Hall, where Mrs W. T. Foster, mother of the bride, receivod the guests, wearing a navy blue_ and saxe and bluo hat. Tho guests numbered about one hundred and twenty, and the usual toasts and responses wore made. The bride's going-away dress was a stylish navy costume, with a brown and lemoncoloured hat. The-happy couple left in the evening for their honeymoon in the south. : WELCOME HOME SOCIAL. A bright and cheery entertainment was the welcome accorded Miss EditU Law, .their new general secretary, by the senior girls, of the Y.W.C.A. last evening.- Tho cafeteria of the institution, where the function wa6 held, as well as the entrance hall, were gaily decked with masses of yellow broom and other seasonable flowers. The programme embraced pianoforte and vopal solos-and competitions, interlarded with little welcoming speeches, to which Miss Law made responses. A dainty supper, over which there much pleasant social intercourse, wouih*. up the proceedings. Miss Law, who ha'g already established herself a warm favourite with the Council and members of the Association, was charmingly attired in a semi-evening toilette of wine-coloured souplb satin, with vest of soft white georgette. » BARNARDO HOMES' JUBILEE. On Saturday afternoon a most successful afternoon garden party, in aiu of Jubilee fund of the Barnardo Homes, was held at "Spring Grove," the residence of Mrs Aubrey Nicholls, the president of the Belfast Young Helpers' League. The function was organised by the ladies of the district, who were ablv assisted by the League members. Although rain interfered with the success of the gathering, the sum of £34 7s 4d was raisofl. During the afternoon the president, Mrs Nicholls, presented four silver medals, won by Nellie Anderson, Pescry Neville, Doreen Harris, and Ron Poison. The Rev. Curnow referred in eulogistic terms to the healthy condition of .the League. SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED AT SUMNER. Another of the series of afternoons arranged for soldier patients of the Orthopaedic Hospital by the ladies of Sumner, was held in the grounds of Mrs Thornley, Nayland street. Sumner, .yesterday afternoon. The arrangements at the city end were carried out by Mrs G. S. Lavie, and about forty returned soldiers availed themselves of the outing. The Rev. E. C. W. Powell had charge of the Sumner organisation, and he was assisted in carrying out the arrangements by Mrs Knight, • Mrs G. F. Allen, and Misses Deacon, and Hirst. The weather was ideal and the pretty grounds were much admired by all present. Afternoon tea was handed round, while fruit, sweets, and cigarettes were also proA programme of- music and other items wris! given by ; Mrs ■D. | Bates, Mrs;. Isaac Wilson, Misses May Barber, M. Allen, Dorothy Alexander, Eileen and Kathleen Thomas. The piano for the occasion was kindly lent by Mrs Watson. Several competitions were held, the hat-trimming competition being won by Gunner Wallace, the prize being a pipe; the second prize being awarded to Rifleman Keating. A cake guessing competition was won by Private W. Stewart, while Private Robertson won the stampguessing competition. The soldiers were delighted with the. afternoon's function, cheers being given for the ladies. BOWLING SOCIAL AT SUMNER. A ■ very successful and .enjoyable evening was held at Sumner last night, when a social was* held in aid of the funds of the Sumner Bowling Club. There was a very large attendance, the evening being given and arranged by the ladies of Sumner. The hall was tastefully decorated, while the tables in the supper-room were decorated with the club's colours (brown ,md yellow). The first part of the evening was devoted to progressive euchre, the prizes being won by< Mrs Beattie, Mrs Mrs Aitken,- and ,Mr Thomas. Dancing was then kept up until a late hour, the music being provided by Miss Sel by, Sirs H. W, Heslop, Miss Allen. Mr G. F. Allen. Mr G. W. C. Smithson, and Miss McDowell.
