ALLEGED BRIBERY

At the wheat enquiry, in oonnexion with the evidence regarding tho financial position of Mr W. O. Grahame, Minister of Agriculture, the question of tho payment of a largo Bum of money for tho lease of the Kensington racecourse cropped up.
Mr Griffith, who was Minister of Public Works at -the time, in evidence said that according to 6tories then current £1000 or £2000, allegodly from tho raccoourse people, had, through Mr Grahame, the party "Whip, been handed to Mr Holman for the party funds. Mr Griffith said he saw Mr Holman, and insisted that the money should bo returned or he would leave the Cabinet.
Mr Holman, in evidence, said Mr Grahame handed him an envelop© containing £1000 for the party funds. He di<l not know from what source it came. Tho matter .was reported to Cabinet, and. after enquiry, it was decided not to accept the money, which was returned. Tho Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts has purchased Mr Streeton's Academy ficture, "Le Cateau Church/' and the mperial "War Museum has purchased his picture of "Bellicourt Tunnel, Hindenburg Line." Mr Streeter sails for Melbourne at the end of tho year. It is reported from London that tho Government has already vacated three largo West End hotels, and formally surrenders the Hotel Cecil this week. The War Office is proparing to release tho National Portrait Gallery and Wallace collection which will shortly bo ro-opened to the public. The displaced staffs, numbering 4000. will bo accommodated in the Alexandra Palace, which was used as an aliens' camp during the war.
