NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. joint committco recently appointed by the thins Wellington clubs, to manage the forthcoming .\en Zealand Championship Chess Tournament, held it 3 first meeting iast week, when thero was a large attendance. The following appointments wero made:—Chairman, itr \V. Maekay; hon secretary and treasurer,. Mr K. S. Taylor; finance committee, Meeera W. Mackar CV \V. Tanner, K. J. Blooker, H. Godtschalk, and ii. K, Kelling; playing* committee, Messrs Tanner, Mason, Brooker, Faulkner, and Kelling; entertainment committee, Messrs Tanm-r, Bock, and A. Clark (with power to tdd to iheir number). To successfully carry out the tourney, which will go down into chess history ts New Zealand's first post-war championship congress, it will be necessary to raise at least £50. Mr F. J. Brooker made the very welcome announcement that. the Ngaio Club is about to join the Association. "Wellington will then be m the unique position of having four affiliated clubs. It may be added that there has been no championship congress in Wellington since Easter. 190S, Wellingtonians having since then etood down twice," viz., in favour of Napier in 1911, and in favour of Auckland in 1013 (Exhibition year). Owing to war conditions there has been no championship tournament in New Zealand for the past five years. In these circumstanccs it is hoped that there—will bo a largo and repreeentaiivc gathering of competitors when the -ingress opens in Wellington on Boxing Dajf,
