OBITUARY.
MR ANDREW BAXTER,
Mr Andrew Baxter, of Oxford, who diod suddenly but not unexpectedly on Wednesday afternoon, and was buried on Saturday, was born in Lanarkshire. Scotland, in 1844, and tho whole of his life was spent in rural pursuits. Towards the end of 1863 lie arrived in "Lyttelton in the ship David G. iteming, and spent the first ten years of his colonial life in sawmilling and bush work /on Banks Peninsula. In 1873 he- removed to Oxford, and for some years, in conjunction with his brother s he was engaged in sawmilling. From 1877 to 1894 the brothers also worked a thrcsh-ing-mill. H© farmed a'property in East Oxford till about six years ago, when he ' retired to a neat little property on the outskirts of the township. Of a r&tiring j disposition, ho did not a prominent part in public affairs, yet his counsel was often sought and readily given. For three years he occupied a seat on the School Committee, and for ten years on the Oxford Road Board j and County Council. lie was also a I member and patron of tho Oxford A. | and P. Association. Two years ago Mr , and Mrs Baxter celebrated thoir golden j wedding. The esteem in which he was I held by tlio community was evidenced by the representative gathering that : attended tho funeral, the ceromony at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. C. Duncoinb (Baptist), assisted by the Rev. Mr Lewis (Presbyterian) and the Rev. F| E. Foot- (Mothodist). The deceased leaves a widow, six sons, and one daughter, i =
