FORMAL OPENING. t The annual competitions of the Canterbury Band of Hope Union, the preliminaries in connexion with which wero held last week, \kgre formally opened in tho Choral Hall last night. There was a fairly good attendance, over which Mr W. R. Blazey presided. Mr E. H. He was par- > tioularly interested because he recognised I their high educational value. There were . many people of ability whoso talents were t lost because they had never been taught to , faco tho public. This was remedied by such competitions as those conducted by the Can- ; terbury Band of Hoi>e .'Union. A greater work still was tie inculcation of tean- > peranco principle*). Comparatively few ohil- • dren were, however, reached by Bands of , Hope and Sunday Schools, and, speaking 1 with a oenso of responsibility as choirmnu , of the Canterbury Education Board, he was strongly in favour of temperance lessons being taught in the schools. He thought no one could: take exception to that; ' there were less impprtant subjects beipg : taught. He wished the competitions all possible success.
