PROTECTION OF UNSTABLE INDUSTRIES. (By Otble.—Press Association.—Copyright.) iKcuiere leiegtamsj (Received August 24th, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, August 22. Mr Lloyd George's summary of the Government's policy dealing with the unstable key industries defines them as fulfilling the following tests: — A product essential for the war, or the maintenance of the country during tho war. An industry so neglected before th® war that thero was an inadequate supply of the product. An industry about 'which tho Govern- 4 ment found it necessary to take special steps during tho war. An industry which, if special Government support \vere withdrawn, could not maintain itself at tho level of production essential to the national life. It is proposed that tho fees charged for the issue of licenses to import goods produced by such unstable industries shall bo fixed, -with regard to each case, to cover the difference between the price at which the article can be imported and tho price at which a similar article can bo sold in the United Kingdom. Mr Lloyd George stated that it might be necessary for some years that the Government should continue to assist such industries. MANUFACTURERS BUSY. (Recoived August 25th, 12.40 a.m.) LONDON, August 34. The "National News" states that th® cotton, woollen, lace, iron, and stool trades are booming in spite of the high prices of coal. Many manufacturers are unable to execute new orders. Shares in cotton spinning companies have risen rapidly during the last few weeks.
