TRUNK RAILWAYS
A MARLBOROUGH CAMPAIGN. LOAN OF TEN MILLIONS ADVOCATED. (SPECIAL TO "TO* PRBS.") BLENHEIM, July 25. The organisatioQ of the Scuth Island Main Trunk Railway Leaguo was advanced at a meeting at which it was reported that a satisfactory working arrangement bad been made with the Marlborough Chamber of Commerco to ; avoid clashing with the latter's "Ad- | vance Marlborough" campaign. The j agreement provides for the* following ' programme: I Urging on tho Government the bor- ) rowing of £10.C00,0J0 sterling for the completion of the main trunk railways : within ten years, the mare important lines to be undertaken with a view to ; their construction in five years; Advocating that if the supply of la- | bour necessary to this objective is . found to be inadequate, it be siipple- | moated by means of an immigration policy • and Aimmrr at joint action with Canterbury for the simultaneous and. early completion of the Otira tunnel ana South Island Trunk railway. An executive was get up to formulate the plan of campaign, wiiich will probable include a large deputation to Wellington at about the time of the assembling of Parliament. The feeling here is that the projects which come under the definition of tho more important trunk lines are the Otira "tunnel line, the connexion of Picton and Christchurch, and the East : Coast line in the North Island.
