The appointment of Mr T. E. Maun- j sell to be Stipendiary Magistrate at Westport is gazetted. Tho North Canterbury teachers will make a presentnfcion to Mr C. D. Hardie, who is retiring on superannuation, in the Y.M.C'.A. Rooms to-morrow, at 11 a,m. The Mayor of Cltristchurch (Dr. H. T. J. Thacker, M.P.) was duly sworn in as a Justice of tho Peace by his Honour Mr Justice Herdman, yesterday afternoon. The "Otago Daily Times'' states that Mr R. W. Gibbs, of the Bank of New Zealand, will be leaving for London towards tho end of the year, and will be away for some time. Mrs and Miss Gibbs will accompany him. Mr R. C. O'Connor, officer in charge ! of tho National Provident Fund Office, at Auckland, has been appointed registrar of births, deaths, and marriages, also registrar of eloctors, Wellington Central, It is stated that an important position in the Royal Air Force has been offered to Major G. Hartgill, a New Zealander, who did splendid work in fighting German aviators during the war. Mr A. C. Philpott, for tho past five years district agent and registrar of brands for the Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commercoj at Waneanui, has been appointed to tho position of district clerk and accountant for tho Auckland district under, tho new organisation of the Department. Mr Noel Wilson (son of Sir James Wilson), who met with an accident while quail shooting in the Manawatu, one of tho leaden pellets glancing off a stump and severely injuring his left eyo, has' been admitted to a private hospital in Wellington for treatment., It is hoped that he will not lose tho sight of the eyo. Letters received by the last English mail announce that Major Keith R. Park, R.A.F., was mentioned in despatches on January Ist, and on Juno 4th was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Major Park, who is the son of Professor J. Park, of Dunedin, already holds tho Military Cross with two bars, and the French Croix de Guerre with palm. Colonol J. Cowie Nichols, who has been Officer Commanding the Otago Military District since the beginning of the war, terminated his duties on tho conclusion of the Peace celebrations this week, and is succeeded in the command of the district by . Colonel T. W. McDonald, N.Z.S.C. Colonel McDonald left New Zealand with the Main Body as C.O. of tho Otago infantry battalion. Mr I. A. James, manager of the State Coal Mines on tho West Coast, "has been promoted to tho position of General Manager of the State Coal Mines of Now Zealand. Mr James will have full control of the Stato collieries in the West Coast district, and also of those in the North Island. And all the State coal depots in the Dominion will also como under his control. Mr James expects to take up, his new duties at an early date. His headquarters will be at Wellington. At the rehearsal of the Christchurch Orchestral Society on Wednesday evening, the conductor, Mr Alfred J. Bunz, on behalf of the Society and tho orchestra, made a presentation of a goldmounted tobacco pouch, suitably inscribed. to the leader of the orchestra, Mr C. G. O. Naumann, on the eve of his departure on transfer to tho Palmorston North Post Office. In wishing Mr Naumann prosperity and best of health in his new position, Mr Bunz expressed his personal appreciation of Mr Naumann's capable service as lender of the orchestra during the timo he had been in Christchurch. Mr W. T. Ward also expressed best wishes to Mr Naumann, who suitably responded.
