COAL QUESTION.
THE MUNICIPAL SUPPLY. The Mayor of Christchurch has received a telegram from Captain Lockington, stating that he has secured a number of coal tubs from the State Mine, which will facilitate the winning of the coal from the Konini-Reef-ton mine. Ho also states that ho is shipping 300 tons of coal for the City Council's Special Coal Committee, this, week, and lias applied for space for a similar quantity next week, Ho is negotiating for two traction engines to place on coal transportation from the mine at Capleston (Boatman's Creek) to Cronadun. Of tho Kamona's shipment, seventy tons were loaded on trucks yesterday. This coal is reported to. be 20 per cent, better than the first shipment received by tho municipal authorities. The Mayor of Woolston (Mr Chas. Hill), and the Mayor of. lliccarton (Mr A. D. Ford), and a representative of the waterside workers at Lyttolton, waited on the City Council's Special Coal Cotnmittee last night with requests for supplies of coal from the shipments being received by the municipal authorities. The committee acceded to the requests for supplies to Woolston and Riccarton boroughs, and decided to givo each 25 tons on trucks from the shipment arriving to-day, and a similar quantity from the shipment. The application for supplies from the waterside workers was, however, held over for decision by the City Council. WANGANTJTS PLIGHT. (rszss ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WANGANUI, July 24. The steamer Inga still lies at the wharf'with 1100 tons of. coal, which tho watersiders refuse to unload. The local gasworks are at tho last limit.. Tho manager intimates that unless supplies are fo r thcoming boforo Monday the works will have to close down.
