POUNDER'S DAY. ' (PBESS ASSOCIATION THJSCEAM.) ' • . > NELSON, July 23. Founder s Day in connexion with tho Cuwthron Institute was observed today. The lecturer was Dr. L. Cockayne, who took for his subject, 'Tho Distribution of tho New Zealand Flora and Vegetation." The chairman of tho trustees (Bishop Sadlier) said that while in England he had visited tho universities of Cambridge, London, and Manchester, and interviewed the Empire's leading scientists, who had promised very valuable heli» to the institute. It was still almost impossible to get together a qualified staff in England. A j-ood deal of progress had beon made during tho year towards the establishment of the institute, but certain legal difficulties had arisen which prevented tho trustees completing their work. "When these were disposed of, legislation wonld be introduced in Parliament. and they hoped tho Institute would be incorporated by Act of Parliament this • ysar. The financial statement showed that thj funds available for tho Institute amounted to £222,532.
