HOSPITAL BOARD

YESTERDAY'S MEETING. Tho North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board met yesterday. Present—The Hon. R. Moore. M.L.C. (in the chair), Mesdaxnes . Wilson, Herbert, and Christie, Messrs T. D. Boag, H. B. Sorenaen, H. J. Otley, A. Smith, H. Patcrson, W. Nicholls, S. Andrew, I. Andrew, R. Evans, D. McMillan, W. P. Spencer, F. G. Norton, and W. J. Walter. Apologies were received from Messrs F. Horrell and M. Bothell. lie Hospital Committee xccommend-cd that tho charge to be made to country lodges be the some aa that mado to the Rechabito Society, viz., half rates. Tho report was adopted. The Ptiblic Health .Committee reported, with reference to the tree planting at +ho Infectious Diseases Hospital, that 15,000 trees had been planted, representing twenty acres, and a large proportion of the blanks of previous years' plautings had been made good. Thero wero yet SGOO trees to plant. Tho report was adopted. The Medical Director of the Tuberculosis Institutions (Dr. Blnckmore) reported that during the month there were 127 attendances at tho. Tuberculosis Dispensary, and oj persons called for information. Two houses were notified for disinfection, and 15 new cases were notified. The nurse paid 63 visits to patients in their own homes. There wero 77 patients in tho Sanatorium, and 48 in tho Coronation Hospital. Tho report was received.

The Institutions Committee reported that at last month's meeting it was resolved to write to the Director of Education asking for tlio addresses of all children committed to the care 'of the Education Department under the Industrial Schools Act, and for whose maintenance tho Board had to pay. A reply had been received asking the reason why tho Board should make such a request, and pointing out that tho Board was not •responsible for the car© of the children but was only responsible for the payment of the money. A reply was being sent to the effect that, as the Board had to pay for the maintenance of the children,, it should have some knowledgo of their surroundings and the manner in which they were oared for. The Board was recommended to allow tho committee to expend a sum of about i6O for the purchase of a. motor-cycle for the head gardener, who, in the course, .of his work, required at times to travel considerable distances. The report was .adopted. Tho Charitable Aid Committee reported that tho committee had met twice- since the last meeting of tho Board. At one meeting 36 applications for relief, representing 111 persona, wero dealt with, and at the other 56 applications, representing 105 persona. Th© report was adopted. The Finance Committee reported that owing to the dilatory manner in which the Defence Department met the accounts for maintenance of coldiers, a letter had been .orwarded to Sir James Allen, and if no improvement could be shown it would bo accessary for the Board to take into consideration Uie whole matter of its agr<v>inent with tho Defence Department. A letter had been received from the Kaikoura County Council showing that it was favourable to tho pro- ' posal that the county should erect a house in qie district for the local doctor. A joint meeting with ihe Hospital Committee was held to. give full consideration to the question of extending the nurecs' accommodation, with a view to meeting not onlv prosent, but: future requirements; but finality had not been reached, and it was expected that a full report with definite proposal would to mado to the Board at the next meeting. The report was adopted.
