For the lirst time*in the history oF Southampton two great liners have safely navigated the Southampton waters without the aid of tugs («»ya a message of May 13th). The Olympic was duo to leave for Canada with 5600 Canadian troops on board, while at the same time tbc Aquitania waa -waiting outside to enter tbo harbour. There had been some little trouble with the tujrs' crews, who are claiming shorter bourn ai3 iiianeasod pay, and they chose this particular time to come out on' strike. Commodore Wirey, on being appealed to, decided to allow the "risk to & taken, of tho ships being navigated under their own steam. The fine dieplay o£ seamanship by Captain Bortraju Hayes, of tho Olympic, and Captain J. W._ Charles, of the Aquitania, was watched with, keeo interest as both liners safely negotiated the difficult tidal waters amid cheep. In a paper roeently read before tha Burlington Association of Mechanical Engineers, the advantages of oil fuel over coal, for warships, wore summarised as follows: —For an equal busker weight the radius of action is increased 50 per cent., and for an equal bunker space. 80 per oent. Oil furnishes up to 83 per cent, o! thermal efficiency as against 50 per cent, for coal. Smoke can be controlled perfectly;, when' it is desirable, dense smoke screen can be produced, or the smoke can be entirely eliminated. With oil fuel, tho boilers can bo forced up to 50 per cent, above their normal rating'. Oil fuel reduces the amount of labour by about 70 per cent. There are constructional advantages in its use, and ships can be bunkered at sea much more readily. • The steamer Western Comet (at <proa«nt in Australian ports) will berth at Wellington and Auckland homeward loading. Tho principal New Zealand agents have cabled urgini? that she should also load at XtfttclUrai and Dunedin.
