SKATING CARNIVAL.

A PICTURESQUE PEACE CELEBRATION. Tho Pcace Carnival u-liich commenced tit the Cnlo&soum Skating Kink last ni™ht is probably the most gorgc-ous cf its kind over held _ in Christchurch. The mirthful sp-irit of Kinj Carnival prevailed, and Peacc nn-J Plenty everywhere proclaimed their return. A striking feature was the fjreat variety of fancy costume, lending a bright spectacular effect. Dospite the variety, ths bounds of good taste were not in a single instance departed from, and there was not a coetume to pain the eyo or mind. Over 100 skaters took part in fancy and novel attire in the grand march, which wis followed by tho iadics' fancy dress parade, in which about 80 participated, while swift on tho heels cf tho gentlemen's parade came tho poster dre-ss-parade, in which somp novel effects were dis- ■ played. Afler the Allied costume parade, I which for variety of colour ar/J general "g«t- ---| up" was the most attractive feature of the processions, the skaters were allowed to throw themselves into the spirit of carnival, and for the occasion kiriT glided with peasant, Jap and Unc!e Sam clasped hands and forgot difference', and the fearsome Red Indian protected tlie Rod Croes girl, while overhead countless while and gTeon streamers and triangular flajs, representing' in lowered lights an Arctic decorative 6chcme, added to the novelty. The costume awards are to be decided by the audience, a voting paper being issued to each person on admission for that purpose. The decisions will be announced to-night. Several competitive events wero held laat night, the results being: — Musical Chairs—First heat: E. H. Cook 1, G. Tipler 2. This contest will be. concluded to-night. Ladi'M' Egg and Spoon Race—Final: Mis 3 J. Bryce 1. Ladies ian and Balloon race—Miss A. Power 1. Gentlemen's Half-mile Race ' (eecond-clasa skaters)— Final: G." Bristol, 20vda, 1; J. Chi'holrn, 50yds, 2; W. Mussen,'<■ c.-, 3. The Carnival will concludo to-night.
