BOWLING.
CHRISTCHURCH CLUB'S ANNUAL MEETING.
The annual meeting of the Christchurch Bowling Club Company, held in tho club pavilion last night, was attended by about 20 members, with Mr W. Helliwell (president) in the chair.
The directors, in their annual report, stated that, while they had to congratulate the members on the satisfactory financial condition of the company, great care must, however, bo taken with the finances, as tho present membership was really not more than sufficient to provide for necessary expenditure in a normal season. Tho membership of the company at the commencement of the season was 78. This membership was practically the minimum on which the club company could be successfully managed on its present revenue. An increase in nicmbarship was desired, so that not only ordinary expenditure might be met, but provision made lor an annual contribution to a sinking fund to bring about the liquids tion of the mortgage of £1150 now current on tb© company's property. It was wiui deep regret that the directors recorded ihe death of the veteran friend and comxado, Dr. Walter Thomas. The late doctor was a very lovable personality, and was always ready with good advice and example o promote tho best interests of tho club ind of the game for whioh he had so much enthusiasm. They were greatly indebted to his eon, Mr David Thomas, for the presentation o. eleven books of records collated by the late doctor, covering the period from 1883 to 1916 inclusive, and which had proved of immense interest and would become of greater value as the year roll by. Appreciation was recorded of tho care and attention which th© green superintendent, Mr A. V. B. Bishop, had given to the green during the season. The balance-sheet showed that the receipts were £241 lis 4d and the expenditure £233 178.
The president, in moving the adoption of the report and balanoo-sheet, referred particularly to the records presented to tho club by the late Di. Thomas's son. These records were of immense historical valuo to the club, covering in detail the club's history for 33 years past.
The report and balanoe-sheet were adopted without discussion.
Motions of sympathy with Messrs Wm. Barnett, F. C. B. Bishop, A. V. B. Bishop, and ,Dr. L. S. Mhnning, on the death of their relatives, were carried.
Tho following office-bearers were elected:— President, Dr. Orchard; senior vice-presi-dent Mr Fred Hobba; junior vice-president, Mr W. S. . New burgh; treasurer, Mr C. J. Atkinson; secretary, Mr F. C. B. Bishop; auditor, Mr H. Bicknell; directors, Messrs Alf. Dickson, H. C. Ridley, E. E. Daniels, and G. B. Wright.
It was resolved that a Sports Committee of three bo appointed, one of whom should be a eol© selector appointed 'by the .meeting. In the discussion it was remarked* that )t was unfair' to impose multifarious duties 6n the sole selector, such as had fallen to Mr A. Dickson lost year.
The following were elected a ' Sports CommitterMessrs H. C. Ridley, E. E. Daniels, and H. P. Wyatt. Mr Daniels was appointed sole selector. He was also elected representative delegate to the Centro. * The president drew the attention of the members to the "Friendly Bowl" on tho table. This had been played for in Wellington on March Ist, and the Christchurch men had brought it back, but not as victors. Next year he said the Wellington Club would send a team to Chris tchurch to play for the bowl. The Christchurch players greatly appreciated the hospitality extended to them by tho Wellington Club. The results of club competitions, for which framed certificates were given to the winners. were:—
Championships—Singles. M. Orchari. Doubles: W. S. Newburgh and Geo. Lewis (skip). Rinks: T. Newburgh, C. J. Atkinson, Alf. Dickson, and M. Orchard. Handicaps—Junior Cup: F. C. B. Bishop (winner), T. Newburgh (runner-up). Struthers Doubles: F. Manttan, C. J. Atkinson (skip) winners, G. H. Mason and Dr. Manning (skip) runners-up. Macdougall Rose Bowl—W. Helliwell (winner), M. Orchard (runner-up). Mr Helliwell having won the Rose Bowl on three occasions, in the years 1914, 1917, and 1919 becomes the owner of the trophy. • Mr Helliwell, in accepting the Rose Bowl, said he realised that the winning of it for permanent possession left a duty on him, and he assured the members that he would give a trophy for next year to take tie place of the one he had carried off.
In view of th© finances of the club, it was resolved that the club give certificates for prizes for next year, instead of trophies. A vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring offioe-bearexs and the green superintendent.
On Mr Langford's motion, a recommendation was passed to the Sports Committee that games for the buttons be revived.
