Advice has boon received from the Minister of Defence that Quaitermast. rSergeaut i\ Oiiiver, of the Otago Infantry Regiment, has been awarded tho Military Medal for gallantry on the field of action. Lieut.-Colonel Thomas Mill, C.M.G., M.15., of the New Zealand Medical Corps (formerly of Christchurch and Geraldine), has been granted the temporary rank of colonel whilst holding the appointment of principal medical oiSccr at tho Trenthani special militaiy hospital.
Mr H. 11. Sellers, secretary to tho New Zealand llaeing Conference, v.lio has been in a private hospital during the last fow days, is now greatly improved in health, and his many friends will be glad to learn that ho expects to be ablo to resume his duties before verv long.
Under date of February 17th, our London correspondent "writes:—Mr Aubrey L. illiams (Christchurch), who served with the New Zealand Engineers in Gallipoli and France, is leaving next week for Italy, to lecture to the British Forces there on conditions in Russia. Mr Williams was for eonio time in St. Petersburg with his brother, Dr. Harold Williams,' who was correspondent there of tho "Daily Chronicle." Dr. Williams is one of the liest authorities on Russian affairs in Lurone.
Among those who returned by tho Malieno was the well-known ' Padre Walls, M.C., who for some two years and a half was associated with the 2nd Wellington Battalion in much of their heaviest fighting. Padre Walls has made a splendid recovery, and no longer needs the assistance of a crutch in getting- about. It is interesting to jioto that Padre Walls is tho second New Zealand Salvation Army chaplain to win tho Military Cross, but tho whole six who have renresentrd the Salvation Arm.v with the N.Z.E.F. have won. golden opinion from all ranks.

New Zealand on her Empire cruise, Admiral Lord Jellicoe was entertained to dinner at Oiaridge's liy the High Commissioner for New Zealand (writes our London correspondent under date of February 1-lthj. Amongst those invited were: Sir Rnsslyn Wcmyss, Kir William Bird wood, Sir" Alexander Godley. Brigadier-General Melvill, ComTiodore Dreycr, Lord Ranfurly, Lord Bryce, Lord Islington, Lord P.'unkct, Kir Gporge Perley, Mr Andrew Fisher, Mr W. P. Sch roiner, Colonel Amery, Sir Thomas Parkinson, Major-General Sir Newton Moore, Sir Frederick Young, and the Agents-General for tho Australian States.
Our London correspondent statos that in an article in "United Empire," Mr W. Basil Worsfold, who was at one time on the staff of Christ's College, refers to tho '87 Club, which was founded in New Zealand in the year 1887, and which had for its mo:tto "AnEducated Democracy." Mr Worsfold remarked that he did not know whether the c ul) still existed, but he had noticed that one of its original members, the Hon. R. Heat-on Rhodes, was present in the Royal G.rJlojy of the House of Lords when the Kirt'o- opened Parliament. Our correspondent understands that other surviving members of the club are Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, Mr E G. Ross, Mr De Renzi Harman, and Mr H. J. Beswick. Another member "was the late Mr A. C. Rolleston.
Lieutenant Vincent Ward, It.N.V.R., son of Sir Joseph Ward, returned a few days ago from the United States and! has been demobilised, (writes our London correspondent under date of February 14th). Lieutenant Ward was sent to America a few months ago to Jiavo charge of a branch of tho shipping from tho United States to French ports. Ho was very much pleased with the busi-ness-like methods of tho United States Shipping Department, which methods ucro not altogether new to him, inasmuch as he had. been soma years in somewhat similar work in 'Canada. Lieutenant Ward is very much improved in health during tho last year. Captain Gladstone Ward, M.T.A.'S.C., is still in Palestine, and is at piesent at tho port of Tripoli.
On Friday afternoon Colonel Chaffov. ! Officer Commanding the Canterbury Military District, accompanied by his staff officer, Major Finnis, visited the home of the lato Sergeant H. J. Nicholas \ C., M.M., at 35 Berrystreet, St. Albans, and presented to the dead soldier s mother the Victoria Cross won by him. The decora/tion had; been pinned to the soldier's tunic by , s Majesty King George.
