(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) n.. ~ ~ STAPIEK April 26. ■The Parliamentary Industries Committee eat here to-day. | Tho first evidence tendered concerned the tobacco industry. Various witnes&ca stated that Hawko's Hay and Tselson-grown tobacco ww exoeilent, and it would pay farmers to grow the crop. Government help should be given to this new industry. Mr A. B. Fallover, manager of t];o Hawie's Bay lobacco Company, said le thought the company wag entitled to a return of duty p-it Mr J. H. Edmondson, manager of the Acetone Co., complained of the duty paid on the plant, and of the excessive r&ilway freights. Mr C. H. Kdwarcta, manager of the X~pier Gas Co., said his company was living from hand to mouth, as far as coal supplied were concerned. Hs urged that State -vessels should carry State coal. He thought an increase in freight was unnecessary. Mr David \\ byte, Hastings, asked: that the Mining Act should be amended, in tho direction of improving mining leases. ' A smelting and bullion plant and a mint should b» established in Wellington. r
