Canterbury nnd Otapo soldiers from the troopship lonic, which berthed at Auckland last week, came down by the ferry steamer on Friday night, arid on arrival at Christchurch, about i_.3o on Saturday morning, were given a qujet liufc genuinely sincere reception. 10 tell the truth, the main cause for the ''reception'' was because it was something in the nature of an Anglo-Anzac contingent which stepped off trie tram, and a large proportion were uot 'returning''—they were coming. lues© vrere the wives of soldiers who had married in the Old Country. Tnere were for Christchurch and suburbs 33 soldiers, 15 wives, and six children; for the AVest Coast 31 soldiers, threo wives, and one child; for stations in Canterbury south of Christchurch. 10 soldiers, eight wives, and two children; for Otago 80 soldiers and 37 wives with children. Members of the Canterbury Automobile Association were in readiness at the station with their cars to convey the Christchurch men and their families or relatives to their respective destinations. The West Coast men (all members of the original Tunnelling Corps) left bv the train for Arthur's Pass, and the South Canterbury and Otago men proceeded homeward by the first oxpress. The troopship Northumberland, which is expected to arrive at Wellington on May 9th, is bringing back 5G officers and 1274 other ranks of the N.Z.E.F., also C officers oi the Imperial Army. Mr A. F. Drayton has received advice that his son Roy is returning in the Kia Ora, due on May 7th. Mrs J. 51 Thackeray street, Walthavn, has received advice that her third son, Sapper E. A. Clemens (11th Reinforcements), is returning in the Kia Ora, due about May 7th. Mr and Mrs W. Clarke, 402 North road, Styx, have received advicfe _ that their youngest son, H. S. Clarke, is returning in the Kia Ora after three and a half years' service in France. Their eldest son, R. J. Clarke, returned by the Tahiti some time ago. Another sou is still in Egypt with the Australian Light Horse. Mr F. W. Burrows, of Waiau, has received advice that his son, Corporal Lloyd Burrows, is returning in the Kia Ora, due on May 7th. Nurse Crompton has received word that her soft, Driver H. M. Crompton, will bo returning home on May 'th. Driver Crompton left New Zealand with the Seventh Reinforcements. Prior to enlisting ho was on the staff of the National Insurance Co. He has had four years' service with the troops. Mrs Hutchinson, Cheltenham street, Merivale, has received word that her youngest son. Gunner J. H. Hutchinson (late A Company, C.Y C., Mounted Rifles) is returning by the Kia Ora. Mr G. M. Small, 47 Cranford street, St.. Albans, has received advice that his son, Corporal L. R. M. SmaU, is returning in the Kia Ora. Corporal Small has fought through the Somme, Messines, and Passchendaele battles without injury. Ho has been on service over three years, having left with the 10th Reinforcements.

Mr E. G. Wood, of Head street, Sumner, has received word that his son, Sergeant E. G. E. Wood, is returning by the Kia Ora. Sergeant Wood left with the Fifth Reinforcements, and went through the Gallipoli fighting and also all through France. He •was wounded several times.
