POLICE PAY AND CONDITIONS
It is somewhat refreshing, particularly so in these days when a recognition of what is justified in the matter of salary improvements to the Public oervico can apparently be obtained only by wearing-down processes, to find the Hon. T. M. Wilford, Minister in ■Charge of Police, taking the initiative and providing for of an additional 10s 6d a week to constables and non-commissioned police, officers as from the Ist April, 1919 (states the "Public Service Journal"). This together with the increase provided some months ago, gives police officers a salary improvement of £54 12s over pre-war rates, which must be regarded as satisfactory, and the Minister has already been thanked by the association for anticipating any proposals for salary increases that it had to make. The association has already asked for an early interview with the Minister in order that thn many questions affecting the Police Force may be placed before him and it is hoped that he will bo ready to recognise the many improvement's in police working conditions that lie in bis hands to effect, and to take prompt effective action to carry them out.
