An Auckland telegram aimounccs the death of Mr William J Speight, diocesan secretary, and M.P. for AucK land East in 1879. Ho waa 74 years ot age. Tho death is announced at mouth, England, of Mr George Oray Itnsse,i, aged ninety, formeny of tno firm J llussell. ltiichie and •» Dunedin. which business w;is taken over in lß7d by the National Moitgago ana A coney Company. The doath is announced of Mr H.. 1 • Hornibrooke, ono of tho best-known mine managers in the Auck.and districtDec.as.d was a son of Dr. Ho.morooke, of Belfast, and went to Auck.and over half a century ago. In tho early day* of the Co.omanuel field, ho managed, and was part owner, of tho liismarcnmine. Wnen tho Kuaotunu field was disoovored he was car.y on tho ground, and later was manager of the KapaiVermont mine. Ho was subsequent!} engaged by a London syndicate tj head a prospecting expedition in tho neighbourhood of Abyssinia. Although not successful from the point of discovering a goidiield, the party located an 11011 deposit, and quite recently he received a communication from, the Italian uovcrn m-ent enquiring if he was prepared to return to that fie:d at the end < f tiie war. Mr HomibrooKe was a member ot the Board of Examiners of mine and battery managers, bolongod to lhames Licensing Committoa for a number cr yoars, and wa9 also a member of OoromaadelOauntx Council.
