THE WEATHER.
VARIABLE CONDITIONS. Yesterday morning the weather conditions were very variable. At 2 o'clock it was blowing a breeze from tho north-east with a clear sky, but at 3 o'clock the wind changed round to tho north-west, and blew in fitful gusts. Before 4 o'clock a south-wost galo was blowing with masses of very black clouds scudding across tho sky. A few showers of rain fell, and throughout the day wintry conditions prevailed. Another rough southerly struck Akaroa in the early hours of yesterday morning, making enough bluster to waken many a sound sleeper. It brought heavy showers of rain, and these continued at intervals right up to noon. Shortly after two o'clock yesterday afternoon a very heavy hailstorm passed over Ashburton, followed by thunder along the hills. The atmosphere became much colder, and thero is every prospect of more rain. wintry conditions prevailed at Rangfora yesterday. During the early hours of the morning a very high southwest wind sprang up, increasing to a galo, which was followed at about C o'clock by heavy Tain lasting for about a couple of hours. After this the weather turned very cold, with heavy showers, during the rest of tho day.
